Kim Lawson - Owner
Kim is the owner of Fishpaws Marketplace and is responsible for all the day-to-day operations of the business. She practically cut her eyeteeth on the liquor and wine industry. (Her father has been in the business since 1968.) Kim grew up experiencing her family’s European attitude towards wine; that wine is a beverage to be consumed with food, an adjunct and a complement to any meal. During her years at Fishpaws, Kim has traveled throughout the wine regions of California, the East Coast, and Europe. She also attended VinExpo in Bordeaux. She has attended many classes and seminars on wine and has educated and refined her palate with extensive tasting of all types of wines and spirits from all over the world. Kim has even taught a class on wine at Anne Arundel Community College.
Kim is a principal member of Fishpaws tasting team but her personal passion is customer service. Kim is dedicated to having the best customer service possible. If you are looking for a product that you can’t find in our catalogue, Fishpaws will do their best to find it for you. At Fishpaws, special orders aren’t special, they are part of the finest customer service.
Kim’s formal education consists of a bachelor’s degree from Salisbury State University in Business & Marketing. Kim has been active for many years with the Anne Arundel County Licensed Beverage Association as an officer and board member. She is also a member of the Maryland State Licensed Beverage Association and the Severna Park & Arnold Chamber of Commerce.
The store was purchased by the Lawson family in 1983. Upon graduation, Kim worked in sales for 2½ years, although, her real desire was to run the family business. At that time, her family owned 5 gift stores throughout the MD, DC and Virginia area. After managing the gift stores and learning the liquor business, she realized it would be better to consolidate her efforts and run the liquor store full-time. The gift stores were then closed or sold. Upon managing the liquor store full-time, Kim realized she needed to differentiate the business and started concentrating her efforts on fine wine. After about 5 years of intense marketing efforts, Fishpaws was known as the place to find good wines.
No wonder that Kim was selected as Retailer of The Year by The National Association of Beverage Retailers in 1996. And in 2014, Kim with Fishpaws Marketplace was chosen as the US Small Business Administration’s Family Owned Small Business for Maryland.
Angela DiCenzo - General Manager
Next time you are looking for that hard to find bottle of goodness make sure to track down our Liquor Manager Angela. As a young woman, Angela worked as everything from a runway model to a Pit Boss for a casino. Her favorite memories, however, were of her time in the restaurant industry where she acted as a server, bartender, and bar manager all over the country. Locally Angela served as the bar manager for Clark’s Saloon right here in Severna Park for 7 years before she headed over to Carroll’s Creek in Eastport where she served as their beverage manager for 13 years. Angela and her husband of 22 years are avid sailors but when they aren’t out to sea Angela can commonly be found tending her garden or enjoying a dirty martini. As the Liquor Manager for Fishpaws it falls to Angela to keep the shelves well stocked with all your favorites and to seek out all the new products you don’t even know you love yet. “The beverage industry has always felt like home to me”, says Angela, and she encourages all of you to stop by and say, “Welcome Home” the next time you are in the area.
Chris Rausch – Beer Manager
Chris’ love of beer began at a young age, ostensibly youngerthan the law would allow. But to his credit, his taste was geared towards therelatively new and growing craft beer market, and has remained that way ever since. When Chris turned 21, he got his first set of home brewing equipment and set out to learn as much as he could, not just about American craft beer, but also about the brewing traditions of Belgium, Germany and England. He visited breweries, brewpubs and retail shops locally and while traveling, drinking and bringing home the best beers he could find. During that time, Chris made a successful career selling guitars for local manufacturer Paul Reed Smith. But after nearly 10 years with the company, the urge to get into craft beer industry professionally finally took over. Chris obtained his Cicerone Certified Beer Server certification in 2013, and shortly thereafter left PRS to join Flying Dog Brewery, giving tours and working at their taproom in Frederick. He also began bartending part time at Frisco Tap House in Columbia, MD. After a brief period juggling the two jobs and working 7 days a week, Chris decided to concentrate on Frisco full time, since their 52 constantly rotating draft lines would allow him to exponentially expand his beer knowledge and palate. Whenever possible, Chris would also do tastings or work at local beer festivals, pouring for breweries such as Yards, Harpoon, Brewers Art and others, providing those brands with an expert presence when brewery representatives weren’t able to be present.
Two years of hard work building a new career paid off when he was asked to join the Fishpaws team full time as Beer Manager. Although you’d be hard pressed to catch him without a beer in hand, Chris also enjoys playing his guitars, collecting comic books, photography, hiking or relaxing outdoors, going to the movies, and geeking out
over anything Star Wars related.
